Sri Lanka is truly a year-round destination with fine weather alternating between the South Coast (Nov-Apr) and the East Coast (May-Oct).
However the simple truth is that weather patterns have altered due to climate change so there are no longer any distinct rainy or dry seasons and the monsoons have scattered. It can be sunny or rainy on any given month.
The interior of the island can be explored at any time of the year. There might be rain in May and June, but the island is lush and very beautiful after the monsoon rains.
The South West Coast / Galle Beaches/ Ahangama/ Deep South/ Tangalle
Nov-April
This is the traditional ‘beach season’ on Sri Lanka’s South Coast where the seas are at their calmest and rainfall is at its lowest. The beaches fill up with sand, the resorts are busy and safe sea bathing is possible at many locations.
May-October
This is considered the ‘off season’ on the South Coast as the seas become choppy and there may be some rainfall.
However plenty of tourists still flock to the beach resorts on the South Coast during the Summer School Holidays due to high hotel rates and logistics of travel to the East Coast. All hotels at South Coast resorts also reduce their prices significantly during this period.
The East Coast
May-October
During these months the East Coast contains some of the most beautiful beaches in Asia, just like the Maldives, with soft white coral sand and waist deep water where you can wade out in to the sea for quite a distance. If traveling with kids this is a fantastic option.
There are however logistics involved in getting to and returning from the East Coast beaches – involving a 5-hour journey. Usually, stopover nights are required near Colombo or the airport. Prices increase substantially especially during July and August (3 star hotels charge 5 star prices!) as hotels seek to recover lost revenue from the Winter Season (see below)
Nov-April
These beach resorts are totally deserted as the sea turns rough. For a variety of reasons tourism totally collapses during the Winter Season on the East Coast, except for perhaps Arugam Bay.
